Mac ‘n Memory

Does anyone know if you need to buy from mac itself to upgrade the memory of the macbook? or any laptop memory would do? I feel like my macbook’s so slowwwww. Maybe I just need to reformat it or something. I want Mac OS X 5 (Leopard)

I never really understood how to update Mac OS’s. Is it like windows wherein you have to do a complete reformat of target drive or the drive where you’re going to install it.

Maybe I should windows there instead… the left click would be a problem though. *sigh*

Bleh.

All I’m thinking of now is to spend =/

The 4 Connectivity Problems: No Sync

I’m just going to write about what I’ve learned at work lately. This could also be helpful for some people, I hope. Anyway, I’m a tech support agent, tier 1, for a DSL ISP in the US. What I could write here may be true for that ISP, but not for others, but some could also be true. Who knows.

1. No Sync

This one means that there is no connection between the modem and the DSLAM, or “network.” This is what I usually tell my customers, “There seems to be no connection between your modem and our network.” Why do I replace DSLAM with network? Because there ARE some pretty computer illiterate customers and it’s just easier that way.

Signs: Flashing DSL light in most modems. Some may be called the Ready light.

This is a big problem for IFITL customers or those who are connected with fiber cables or just an Ethernet cable. They don’t need a modem, so whenever they’ve got a problem with connection, it almost always ends up in a truckroll or a technician coming over their place.

Fixes: Powercycling or hard resetting the modem, checking cabling and filters, and Electromagnetic Interferences like speakers, location, and sending a technician over. This does not require any advanced troubleshooting and the computer usually does not need to be touched, except for configuration of the modem.

Carpets can also affect this since it may cause static. Some customers put their modems on their floors, and sometimes they happen to be carpets. It’s frustrating for them sometimes. Sometimes we can’t do anything from our side but to send someone over to check both indoor and outdoor physical connections.

Generation Z: A Disposable Community

generation-z-a-disposable-community

Ten years ago, hard drives were sold with a warranty of 10 years or something like that. And they came in smaller capacities. Now they come in bigger capacities and with shorter warranties.

I bought a hard drive last October because I was worried about the somewhat clicking sound my other hard drive was making, and it housed my music. So I bought a new hard drive (because I can) and moved all my music there with the intention of organizing them and THEN burning them to DVDs. It had 1 month Advanced Warranty Replacement which meant that if it breaks in one month, I could get a replacement immediately, and the standard warranty of 1 year, which meant that if it breaks after the first month, I’ll have to wait another month to get a new one.

That clicking hard drive still works. The one I bought crashed.

Memory Upgrade

Hmmm… There are some stuff I want to do once I get my first paycheck. One of them is to upgrade my laptop. I was first worried and wondered if I needed to buy memory from a mac store directly or any laptop memory module (RAM) would do. I went to the mac store and all they had was a 2Gb module and it costs around P14000 if I remember correctly. To hell with that. I can only afford maybe 2 512Mb modules, which they didn’t have.

I surfed around on the net and found this website, MemoryStore.com and you just choose the model of your computer or laptop and it will give you a list of modules that are compatible with your computer. I looked up Dell Memory because Orc has been planning to upgrade his Dell computer as well but since I didn’t know the model of his computer… never mind.

Anyway, I won’t buy from a mac store anymore since the price is probably 10 times more expensive. I’ll just buy a generic one.

R.I.P., Dearest Maxtor and X

Apparently, my Maxtor drive died. I’m still looking into ways to fix it, but at the moment, I’m declaring it dead. Along with my X drive.

I just bought X recently, about 2 weeks ago. It’s a 320Gb Seagate drive (PATA) and I planned to dedicate it to music. It’s an internal HDD inside an external case. So far it had about 200+ Gb of music already.

I’m going to write about what happened in case someone else has a better idea.

I mentioned that I’m also taking proofreading and editing a paper for someone. But I was too lazy to sit on my behind and I decided to do it on my laptop like I did with the first draft. I saved the draft on X because I set it as download default since that was what I’ve been downloading lately–catching up on music I missed for the past few months. And X was on share.

So I was trying to access the draft over WAN and it said the drive was inaccessible. I’ve been getting I/O Device errors before so I thought that that might be affecting it, so I moved my lazy behind to the desktop and checked what was happening. I tried accessing X and it kept saying that it was inaccessible. There was another error but I forgot what it was.

I figured that maybe a reboot would help, so I rebooted.

After the reboot… It said it was empty.

Blog Ed 101: Blogging and Education

I attended the Bloggers Kapihan event at MonSay yesterday and I must say, it was very informative. It was called Bloggers Kapihan 2.0: Blog Ed 101. Before it started, I went to Cubao and met with Mama and I got myself a new wristwatch! And then I went to MonSay and climbed a mountain. With a not-yet-fully-healed sprain, it was really a high mountain to climb. I chatted with Mr. Lalon dela Rosa about the CEP, school stuff, future plans, what’s wrong with the Philippines and the Filipinos and a lot of other stuff. That was for about an HOUR (The event started late).  And then I asked questions… voiced my opinions… and stuff… The pancake donut thing of Mr Donuts is gewd!

I registered as “Mi” again. Maybe I should write Miii instead? Lalon asked me, “Why Mi?” maybe I should make up something prophetic… nanchatte :D (darnit! I still can’t figure out how to make wordpress accept japanese characters again T_T)

Oh. Ok. the forum.

The first speaker was Prof Danny Arao of UP Diliman and Bulatlat.com.

Teacher Resources for Filipinos

I have this big dream. It might sound a little too big, though, but I want to start a Teacher Resource website for Filipinos. In the wee hours of procrastinating my lesson plans and/or looking for what good activities I could use in my classes, all are resources for western classrooms.

The Filipino classroom is much more different. We have a quasi standard set curriculum for most schools in basic education. For example, in English, Music and Arts in high school, the first year focuses on Philippine literature, music and arts. In the second year, Afro-Asian. The third year focuses on Anglo-American or western, while the fourth year focuses on the world as a whole.

Well… What I’m saying is… You won’t really be able to find teacher resources on, say, Noli Me Tangere or Philippine History.

Radar Detectors

I just found out what a radar detector is. I was reading about the best radar detector when I thought to myself, “What the HECK is a radar detector anyway?”

Matt kindly explained that it’s for traffic thing and I don’t think it exists here. At least I’ve never heard of it. Traffic enforcement here is … obsolete. Haha… I mean.. It’s low tech. It’s No-tech rather. :D

Imagine if our traffic enforcers get radars… their radars would be going crazy and they wouldn’t know which one to catch. Hahaha…

Pictures!

Whenever I look at digital cameras, I feel a little sad because I want one. But then I have other priorities before the digital camera. Laptop first.

I can afford to wait because it’s not like I don’t have access to one. I can use my brother’s girlfriend’s digital camera if I want to.

Most of the things I take pictures of are my dogs or nature or people… well, anything really. But I like taking pictures of nature the most. Just the image of trees against the sky, or the perfection of flowers amaze me.

Most of all, I like taking pictures of events. Like when I’m with friends whom I rarely see, like my Amigas, taking pictures randomly is the best. It’s like capturing that moment forever.

I don’t really look for anything in a camera… as long as it takes clear pictures. well, maybe I do. The Macro function of the camera is what I really like. I like taking pictures of stuff like the pollen of flowers. That would require a really good one.

Other than that, everything is good.
