Last Day of Student-Teaching

My sweet students gave me a card (each class) …

Today was my last day of in-class teaching. All that’s left are to check papers, check more papers, revise all my lesson plans, do more stuff as a student (papers, requirements), give make-up quizzes and other stuff!!!!

ALMOST DONE!~ As much as I love them, I want to graduate sooooon.

oh oh… at the start of Gold’s class, when I greeted them “Good Afternoon” they all said good afternoon together… in harmony! It was so nice… I wish I could’ve recorded it, though it’ll always be in my heart. It was really nice…

Adieu, Shakespeare!

We finished The Merchant of Venice today! No more Shakespeare!!! FINALLY!!!

for now. If I DO pursue teaching as a career, I will have to do more Shakespeare. I mean–teaching in a high school classroom.

I DO have intentions of teaching, just not like this one I am doing now.

BUT STILL!!! NO MORE SHAKESPEARE!!!

I’ve never liked Shakespeare. I never did and I never wi… …

mmm

mmmmmmmm

MMMmmm

Now that I’m thinking about it, I DID enjoy The Merchant of Venice. And the stage play of the Tagalog Version of As You Like It …

HMMMmmm…

Okay. So I did.

No more required reading of Shakespeare then. :)

My Overstay at McDonald’s

The power died this afternoon and I panicked because I still needed to mark a crapload of papers. So I went to McDonald’s which is just like 150 limping steps away, and stayed there for like 4 hours. I just ordered the regular burger which I didn’t eat, large fries which I really didn’t care about but managed to eat 1/3 of it, a large coke which I drank within the first 20 minutes, and a chocolate fudge sundae which I drank.

When I went there, I only brought my bag and 3 document containers (1 file case, 1 expandable envelope organizer, and the document bag that came with my backpack), my Zen V Plus, my Pop’s cellphone because mine is broken, pens, post-it notes for marking, and a box of paper clips — Yes. I bought a box of paper clips just for this “occasion” of marking backlogged papers.

What’s amazing was I hardly noticed the time. I didn’t have a watch. Pop and I kept exchanging the SIM in his phone so I stopped bothering setting the time. To look at the time on my Zen, it had to be on, which it wasn’t.

A~ah.. is that a good thing or a bad thing? But really, it is important to have a watch in class so you can manage your time. I have one on my ID… my wristwatch’s strap got chewed on… *eyes Taba*

Well… A Rolex would be fine, though, I could care less about the brand. I want to buy one of those buy 1 take 1 watches for P180 only but I don’t think I can trust the quality of those. I might have to adjust the time every hour because it would be either too fast or too slow.

I stayed at the 2nd floor of the McDonald’s Anonas-Kamias branch and down across the street, there was a sign that says “Circumcision Package for Summer!” It’s only October!

:D lol.

Guilty or No Guilty!

This is an assignment I gave my students a couple of weeks ago. It was right after Erap’s final trial at the Sandiganbayan, wherein he was convicted of plunder and acquitted of perjury. While many teachers were checking student essays on this topic, there were also a lot of laughs. There were some kids who wrote forgery instead of perjury, and “pardon” being the one said when you didn’t hear something clearly and wanted the person to repeat it (”Pardon me, could you repeat that?”)

Being an English teacher, I have my own share of funny essays. Add to that horrendous grammar and handwriting… Anyway, I asked them to research on the events from 6 years ago that led to this event (objective), and their thoughts on this (subjective).

Guilty or No Guilty!

The result of the trial of former president Joseph Estrada, who was accused of plunder and forgery last 2001, was formerly sentenced by the Saligang Bayan last wednesday September 12,2007. But what are the affects on the Philippine people? what ever was decided of the Estrada plunder case would have agitated the still sharply divided nation on the former president. For me, I either choose anysides in many cases.

There are reasons to agree, which was the easier to explain and out of many people they were the largest people. Other says for stealing the nation’s trust. But for me, I think it’s efficiently right to have the suspect sentenced if he or she did what was accused to him or her. This explanations was usually given by anti-Erap’s rallies.

Few people dis agreed the decision because of many reason.

Some says the court which has not enough evidence and said to like to end the trial for the people to say they’re doing some thing. Few says he didn’t do it for he who waited for 6 years in jail agreed to face the court maybe because he has confidence in him. But for me he have confidence in knowing his inocence will win but no.

Whatever was decided if Erap who was sentenced for 40 years in jail, guilty  or not guilty it is decided. Maybe us people have different answers to the questions because of our different views in life and our values.

And for you what do you think? GUILTY?or NO GUILTY?

I know her grammar was bad, and her thoughts were unorganized. But she had some pretty good ideas, like the nation being divided and people having different views and values.

Still… I can only give her a passing score. >_<

Sprain Day Part 2 - Hospital Visit

For the first time, I went to the hospital uber willingly — Yes, I did, despite my phobia. Sure, I went there with teary eyes and a limp, but I wanted to try getting stronger painkillers — which I didn’t get. No, it’s not that I wasn’t in pain so much, but my university’s infirmary’s pharmacy didn’t have it. Stupid doctor, prescribing me medication which did not exist!

Anyway, the conversations I am about to post that took place at the hospital were in Filipino but I shall translate them anyway for the sake of my readers.

Upon arriving in the UP Diliman Infirmatay [read: inFER-mah-TAI (Infirmary + Patay [dead]… because people accidentally die there) ER…

Receptionist: What do you need?
Mi: I sprained my ankle.
Receptionist: Okay, fill this out.

And so I fill it out… and she makes me wait… standing…

Sprain Day Part 1 - Damn Taxi Drivers

We had make-up classes today because we started the quarter late, but the exams didn’t get moved, plus those days of no classes, and another day will be missed Friday next week, the Friday before exams. My class started at 8 am.

I left the house at 7 am and stood in front of the gate for about 10 minutes. Five (5) empty taxi cabs later with drivers who refused to take me, I limped towards the intersection, crossed the street and tried flagging more empty taxi cabs. I don’t remember how many empty taxi drivers refused me anymore, but I was in pain and I wanted to cry. I had tears falling but it wasn’t full-blown crying yet.

FINALLY, after 30 minutes of waiting, a taxi cab finally stopped in front of me and I said KATIPUNAN and sobbed. I complained to the taxi driver that the other drivers refused to take me and that I was in pain and that I needed to go to school and I cried and cried until I felt better.

I made it barely on time — 7:55am. I scribbled some questions my ST told me I needed to take up, and then limped with her to the classroom.

As usual, my class was a pain in the ass– and foot.

A-ah~ The quarter is almost over.

Anyway, TAXI DRIVERS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO CHOOSE CUSTOMERS RIGHT??? Isn’t there a law or something like that? DAMN THEM.

Teacher Resources for Filipinos

I have this big dream. It might sound a little too big, though, but I want to start a Teacher Resource website for Filipinos. In the wee hours of procrastinating my lesson plans and/or looking for what good activities I could use in my classes, all are resources for western classrooms.

The Filipino classroom is much more different. We have a quasi standard set curriculum for most schools in basic education. For example, in English, Music and Arts in high school, the first year focuses on Philippine literature, music and arts. In the second year, Afro-Asian. The third year focuses on Anglo-American or western, while the fourth year focuses on the world as a whole.

Well… What I’m saying is… You won’t really be able to find teacher resources on, say, Noli Me Tangere or Philippine History.

The Sign

My headset broke last night. No, not the cheap one. The PhP450 one. That’s like US$9. Pretty darned expensive for me when I bought it because I don’t have a job. How? You’re asking how? I accidentally dipped the volume control in my coffee. Don’t ask how I did that. It just happened. I couldn’t even believe it myself.

Lately, one of the reasons why I don’t do my work is because I want to sing and

Assumptions and Stereotyping

A few months ago, this Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez branded UP students as destabilizers and naked runners. This is because of UP’s tradition of the students speaking their minds, being activist or leftist, and so on. The UP Oblation run where a bunch of fraternity men run naked was and is a form of protest against the government or whatnot.

Well, think again. That may be true before, but not anymore. A lot of students are now apathetic. Not just students of UP but the youth in general. They don’t care much about what’s going on with the world or with the country–unless it is required of them to know.

Admit it.

FLUSTERED! FRUSTRATED! FLUSTERATED!

I wish my life was so exciting that you would have to need popcorn machines right beside you.

My teacher in Educ181 told us the requirements for the class. One of it was was our ‘highest moment” and the other was our “lowest moment.”

I asked what if we were at a constant low, and she said that person would have to be depressed. The whole class laughed. I laughed with them. What they didn’t know, was that I was laughing at myself.

Just three weeks left. THREE WEEKS. If I hardly noticed 12 weeks pass by, then the three weeks would be passing by faster.

I still haven’t made a “Perfect” Lesson Plan — Perfect, as in the Lesson Plan would only need minor changes like grammar, and everything would be executed perfectly.

Unfortunately, she’s been sitting in my classes lately and it’s frustrating me. It’s flustering me. IT’S FLUSTERATING ME!

– I did not invent that term. It hasn’t even entered the Merriam-Webster dictionary. A Google search shows it in a VietEnglish dictionary though.
