Philippine Prudential Life Scam

philippine-prudential-life-scam

On my way home today, the bus I was on made an offense and contested it with the MMDA so they were taking forever to be on their way. While waiting for like 20 minutes while they try to talk it out, my phone rang and saw an unfamiliar number. I rejected it the first and second time, since I was in EDSA and it was pointless to answer the phone. The third time, I picked it up. I could hardly understand what the other person was saying so I just said to call me back after 30 minutes.

I got the callback after an hour. It was a Fin Morales from Philippine Prudential Life telling me that I got picked to be qualified in a raffle to win a Honda Civic(?). In order to completely qualify, I needed to go to SM Megamall and participate in a contest. Just by going there, I’ve already got a (1) guaranteed premium item. I’ll also be immediately eligible for a (2) raffle coupon for US$10,000. Aside from that, if I win the game, I could (3) win a Honda City(?) right then and there. I said that I’m far and it will take me about 3 hours to get to SM Megamall, but they said that they’ll give me a time to commit, and if I can be there within that time frame, I also instantly get an (4) additional gift. All I needed was to be there and bring an ID and a bank identification, either a credit card or a checking account. I said I had a credit card.

I asked if I can just do it tomorrow since I work at 2am and I had just arrived from work (that was almost 2pm already). They said it was a once-in-a-lifetime chance and I could win, but the slots for eligibility were limited. I said I didn’t want it. I had work and no way am I going to jeopardize my health for something that isn’t a sure thing. She said I could have someone represent me instead like my mom. I just have to have her bring my ID and credit card.

Well, I thought, I could just go and check it out and go straight to work afterwards. I never really said okay. I asked for the details, like where to go. I mean, sure, why not, if I’m going to win, I could go eat Cuban food and sit by the beach in any hotel miami could offer with $10,000. Here are my notes of that call (because she said I needed to write it down)

Philippine Prudential Life Kotse something (I can’t remember)
5th Floor, SM Megamall Bldg A.
Left - Derm Clinic
In front of Copytrade
There’s a car
Signage: PPL - Phil Prudential Life

Go to the Head Office, inform them that I spoke with Fin Morales, personal cell: 09204207158
Look for Erojean Batara (?), and I will be assisted immediately.
There’s a touch screen game that I can take my time with, but before that there’s a kind of orientation that is standard of 45 minutes to tell me about the company sponsoring the contest which is PPL

#1 Guaranteed Premium Item
#2 Raffle coupon for US$10,000
#3 Chance to win Honda car (Heck, I’m not into cars so I have no idea, civic, city, etc)
#4 Additional gift item for being on time.
I’m #2 on the list.
It’s free to join the promo, no money involved, no obligation to buy anything.

The numbers that called me: 09178222132, 09178732151

I told Yu that I was going to go and check it out, but he was afraid it was a scam so he told me to bring someone with me. I called Iks and he said it was a scam. They’ll make you buy insurance. I didn’t want that. He said that maybe I could check it out anyways because I’m not getting any younger and I should really think of getting insurance. But he can’t accompany me.

Well… Okay. I figured I’d search it first on Google and I found Arpee’s article on the Philippine Prudential Life scam.

*Sigh*

It was too good to be true. Good thing I thought of checking it out first.

I think people are easily scammed because of the need for money or freebies. It’s such a sad world.

Imma make this clear I ani’t from that company. i wouldn’t know shit about that company. What i do know is that all ya’ll ain’t a victim of a scam u guys just fell into their sales pitch which is exactly what all ya’ll described. Do you guys even know what a scam is? A scam is when people trick you out of your money for something useless. what these sales agents did they sold you something that could be life changing and life saving. It never hurts to be prepared for the unexpected. WHAT THESE PEOPLE DID IS NOT A SCAM. MOST OF THE PEOPLE HERE DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT A SCAM IS. DON’T HATE THE PEOPLE WHO TRY SO HARD TO SELL THESE TO YOU THEY HAVE THEIR OWN PROBLEMS, THEY HAVE TO PUT FOOD ON THEIR TABLE AND CLOTHES ON THEIR BACK, THEY HAVE FAMILIES TO TAKE CARE OF JUST LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE IN THIS FUCKED UP WORLD. WHAT YOU GUYS ARE DOIN IS BAD YOU GUYS ARE RUINING THE CHANCES FOR THESE PEOPLE TO SURVIVE IN THIS WORLD. KAKARAMAHIN KAYO LAHAT NG NAGSULAT NG MASAMA ABOUT THIS COMPANY. PAGISIPAN NYO NG MAIGI BAGO NYO SABIHIN NA MASAMA SILA KASI MAGAGAMIT NYO ANG BINILI NYO PAGDATING NG PANAHON.

@Jess: surely when you signed up for something you would have a piece of paper confirming your “insurance”. There might be a contact number there.

@Joey: Some of it might have been a sales pitch, but some had experiences of getting their credit card “borrowed” for confirmation of their identity or some other crap, but in fact, getting it swiped already for the purchase of the insurance. If this isn’t a scam, then I don’t know what is. Plus, this company already had their license revoked since April 2009. They are not allowed to sell any plans anymore. Is it still not a scam? Maybe it should be called an illegal operation instead. I am in no way defending any of the people who have left comments here, but before leaving a stupid comment about “clearing up” the meaning of a “scam” and insisting that it is a “sales pitch,” it would do you well to read the previous comments and the linked articles, and more of the comments from that linked article. Sure, these people are trying to make a living for themselves, but the people who got tricked into buying these “insurance plans” also have to make a living, and if they feel they don’t need these plans (assuming it is valid), then it is up to them. A lot of companies now include insurance as a benefit. If they earn enough to have a credit card, then most likely they would have that benefit. Maybe not all, but a lot of them.

@Mi: After reading all the comments here I think Joey is correct. It’s a simple sales pitch, and people were convinced enough to buy a product that may help them in the future. My deceased father bought a plan a few years back and when he died we actually got the money from his insurance without any problems. Also I think you’re mistaken as to which company this is. It’s “Philippine Prundential Life Insurance Co.” not the Prudential LIfe who got its licence revoked a few months ago. I believe its under the Insurance Commision, maybe you should just call them to verofy if its a legitimate company.

its is understood that bloggers mostly got their blog post to be one-sided unless if its an opinionated blog. dont bother telling that blogs are always biased. Blogs are individuals’ diary in the web, so it is expected that its content are one-sided. The good thing is they are sharing their experiences that soon be helpful to others decision-making activities. the bottom line.. next time have a wise decision making habits in dealing these marketing strategies. I don’t think it’s right to say that a product is a scam especially since you didn’t even listen to the product they were trying to sell. You simply made a decision on a whim because you wanted to conform with your friends that it isn’t worth it and they were just trying to sell you a scam. Just because a company is offering you freebies, doesn’t make them scammers do they? Mcdonalds gives out coupons for discounts right? and those coupons count as freebies. Does that mean everytime I buy from Mcdonalds I’m being scammed? I don’t think so. Besides i’m not even forced to buy from mcdonalds they just give me coupons I look at it and decide that the product is worthy of buying. I believe freebies are simply there in order to make a person listen to the sales agents. I myself admit I ignore the people handing out fliers in the mall but I get every freebie that’s being passed around, like the taste tests in groceries or the discount coupons of jollibee or mcdonalds. The sales agents might also have their fair share of problems, most probably because of their professions, if they don’t sell they won’t make a living. The end point is I believe that we shouldn’t judge especially if we haven’t heard them out, we are individuals, we don’t need to conform to the people around us saying it is a scam, we should make a decision for ourselves. I myself was actually approached by a sales agent in sm north edsa near Mcdonalds they gave me a bag :D and asked me to join the raffle so I did, who knows i might win right? I also went to their 45 minute presentation. After that I decided, whether to avail of their product. FYI I didn’t get one because I think I don’t need it yet but maybe I’ll get it when I get a bit older.

hi, we encountered same thing last saturday when me and my wife were shopping in SM Southmall las pinas. they introduced themselves as philippine prudential life… blah blah..
They said that we are qualified for the raffle to play the roulette for a new honda car and US$10,000. so in short we went with them and listen to their so called “one time presentation” for almost 4 hours being curious.
i was questioning their company integrity since they mentioned that the company was established 1960s something but they are not affiliated with prudential life (i dont really get it). so i said how come i never heard of their company before and how come its a “one time presentation” and i can not come back any time if i decided to get insured from them. well i guess its their sales strategy if anyone would fall into it. so in short, they never convinced us to buy from them.
my advice to all readers is: always think think think first before handing your credit card, bank card, atm or debit card to anyone. and never never mention your finances specially to strangers.
@ joey. yeah right they have to work too to get a living…. so as robbers and thieves, they have to steal to put food on their tables. good thing!!!

@joey A: Good for you Joey A, it just really shows how the consumer has the last say when buying a product, it is completely up to us whether or not to get the product even if the sales agents are good speakers, even if they are persistently trying to convince us. It is really at our discretion whether or not we decide to buy. We can’t really blame them if we bought their product even though we don’t need it. It is simply our fault.

sabihin na ntin ang method nila ay iba. pero hindi ba na sa ating mga buyers parin ang huling desisyon kung magustuhan man natin ang product or not? napaka kitid ng mga utak ng tao para i sisi ang isang bagay kahit alam nila na sila namn ang gumagawa ng desisyon. sino ba ang may hawak ng credit card at atm nyo? dba kayo! ako bilang policy holder nasasaktan ako kasi maraming tao ang naniniwala sa blog or tsismis na gawa-gawa lang ng isang tao para siraan ang isang company… since blog’s is in today it is also the way of some company to destroy the reputation.. i would like to ask you mi are working from other company right? it seems you’r so affected kahit di kana man policy holder…stop the dam thing kasi kaming mga policy holder ang affected hindi kayong mga di na avail…kumuha ako ng policy para sa future ko kasi pinarealize nila sakin na ang future ko ay dapat kung pahalagahan at ang buhay ng pamilya ko.. kaya pinapahalagahan ba ninyo????//

I’m not a policy holder of this company because I am already insured through the company I work for.

It’s true that the credit card holder always has the last decision whether to sign up for these plans or not. However, there were people who got tricked into signing up even if they did not want to. Some may have been unaware to sign without reading the documents they signed so they can be blamed. Some also got inadvertently charged because they had their cards swiped behind their backs and they just find out later that they’re being charged for it.

It is not my goal to speak ill of this stupid company. If you read the post itself, it is about my experience from the phone call. And as I have mentioned, I think that people get scammed because of their need or getting tricked into freebies. My reactions in the comments of this post is from the other people who have commented on this post and on other people’s blog posts’ comments.

When you signed up for your policy, was your card swiped behind your back? Did you read everything and was willing to go through the regular payments? If yes, then there’s no problem with that. Because you willingly wanted to go through with it. Read the goddamn post again and the comments from other people. Read the linked blog post and all the 527 (currently) comments from there too.

What is this “‘dam’ thing” you want me to stop? The post itself which just shares my experience and that I didn’t go through with it because I read another article? I never even once mentioned against getting insurance policies. Go get insurance wherever you want. I am not the one who wrote the comments about being victimized. This post nor the comments is not an attack against policy holders. How you got that idea, I don’t know. Unless you work for that company and you feel that you are being affected, then too bad, so sad. And if I sound affected, it’s because of comments like yours which sound like personal attacks on me. I have every right to comment back (especially on my own blog) when people like you leave comments that sound against ME personally or blogs or the blog community in general.

Get a life, kthx.

@mi: I agree that the credit card holder always has the last decision on whether to sign up for the plans or not. But I don’t believe that people can be tricked to avail of something they don’t want to, then simply don’t sign. You say that some signed the documents without reading and who’s fault is that for signing? isn’t it the cardholders fault for being ignorant enough to simply keep on signing without reading the documents, remember in Law Ignorance is not an excuse. Being Ignorant here is the same it isn’t an excuse to say that their methods of selling are bad. Also people can’t be charged behind their backs because their credit cards were swiped, that’s impossible without their signature it wouldn’t be approved. I think the people that are commenting in some of the blogs need to get their stories straight because it seems pretty much bulls**t to me.

They are not scammers. They sell a legitimate product from a duly registered philippine company. The distribution method is telemarketing, a relatively new system of moving products that people mistakenly think is a scam owing mostly to the public’s unfamiliarity.

Comment from Kon Sernd Sitisen

The thing is you have to scrutinize the plan they are offering to see if it suits your financial needs and your finances. Even the law prescribes that it is the buyer’s inherent responsibility to examine the thing or service being offered, failing which the buyer forfeits his right to disown the sale transaction he entered. BUYER BEWARE is a universally held principle in conducting the commerce of man. The exceptions are if the buyer was coerced, legally underaged, mentally unfit, or if there was deception in the sale. Otherwise, you are stuck with what you bought. Life insurance, you see, has been in the market for over a hundred years and is a highly legitimate product which has proven, over time, that it can deliver real financial benefits in terms of organized savings and timely indemnity for death or disability. It is no exaggeration to say that everyone needs life insurance. What is exaggerated is the ruthless condemnation of one company simply because their marketing style is comparatively new. Mga kagaya rin natin sila who are out to make a decent living.

Remember, a buyer’s right to disown the purchase transaction which he otherwise voluntarily entered is not absolute. The buyer, too, has a responsibility which if reneged on forfeits that right. Let us keep an open mind about these things.

I got the same circumstances. I’ve got a text from a certain Ms. Kimchie telling me
that i have to claim a reward from the main office of Phil. Prudential. I got curious but i surf the internet first to secure first hand information. I saw these comments. Thanks God!

i think… pplic wont put their branches at sm malls if scam lng ung company nila
same that henry sy wont allow for sure tenants na manlolokko
mall un… if u think naloko kayo, u can easily notify guards or the sm admin.

Hi, Mi…Just want to share my story last Thursday regarding Philippine Prudential
Insurance…

I received a text from Mr. Winnie Andrade of Prudential Life, FINAL NOTIFICATION - that I won three major prices: Prudential Life Insurance until my 60 years old, a Datamex scholarship (and can be transferred) and raffle draw. I did call Mr. Winnie Andrade regarding this and advised me that I must have first these requirements: job, ATM, credit card, checking or passbook account and government identification card. Since I have these requirements, I asked Mr. Andrade when to get these my prizes. He told me that I would receive text or call from him again as soon as I have the claiming code and that would be the time to go to Prudential Paseo de Roxas, Makati City. It’s been a while when we had our conversation that I also forgot these things because I had also job to do. Last June 12, 2010, when I checked all my received texts, I saw again Mr. Andrade texts. I did text him again when I get my claiming code for my prizes and even finished my text if these prizes are real or scam. He didn’t answer so I really thought, it was a scam BUT I NEVER ERASED HIS TEXTED BECAUSE I THOUGHT OF HELPING PRUDENTIAL INSURANCE IN CASE I HAVE A CHANCE.

June 24, 2010, after my routine facial cleaning at Dermaclinic Megamall, (the time was 4:30 p.m.), I had the chance to visit Prudential Life. I went left side first. I talked to customer service staff and showed the texted of Mr. Winnie Andrade. She told me:
“Ma’am, dyan sa right side yan, punta ka dyan, sila makakatulong dyan.”
I went to right side and while walking, a male employee approached me and asked if I have credit cards. I told to him,
“sandali lang ha, may aayusin lang ako dito sa Prudential.” When I went to Prudential right side, I asked one front liner,
“Ma’am, may papakita lang ako sa inyo if totoo ito or scam.” I did read the texted of Mr. Winnie Andrade of Prudential Life; she said,
“Ma’am dito po tayo sa isang room.”
The front liner and gay employee escorted me to another room. A different front liner of that room, aside to former front liner (and the gay also with my side) said to me,
“Yes, Ma’am, ano po yon?”
I responded, “I just want to know kse itong text sakin ni Mr. Winnie Andrade of Prudential Life kung totoo ito, that I have a final notifications from Prudential that I won and must have claiming code. Kasi nung nag usap kami ni Mr. Winnie Andrade, sabi niya na may prudential life insurance ako till 60 years, Datamex scholarship and raffle promos. Pero kailangan may ATM/Credit cards ako, job and banking accounts.” ALL OF THEM AGREED, from the former to the other front liner to that gay,
“Ma’am totoo yan di yan scam.”
Thus, I believed it was all true because they agreed to the text message of Mr. Winnie Andrade. I still remembered, they wrote the name of Winnie Andrade to the PPLIC AUTOHAN. BILANGAN II. I WAS SO HAPPY TO GET THESE PRIZES. The front liner again told me,
“Ma’am okey lang, may i-prepresent lang ako sa inyo, 45 minutes lang.”
I was, that time, didn’t want to say “yes” of that 45 minutes because I had to go to my office. However, in view of the fact that “I THOUGHT” I WON THREE PRIZES, I said yes and signed a paper.
The Sales or Marketing Officer (I’m sorry again I forgot her name, the thing I remembered to her, she is a nurse and graduated at CEU) really good in sales/marketing, very responsive, presentable and beautiful. And to be honest, I even helped her in my little way, by getting a “protector plan” amounting P2,565.00. I did declare to her that I have Manulife and Philam Insurances now. When I saw the time, it was 6:47 p.m, I became annoying because I didn’t have the time to visit my office and also thought it was only 45 minutes. I wanted to ask that then my 3 prizes but my face was kinda irritated again (because I didn’t have time to check my office) when someone approached me,
“Ma’am basta gusto mo yung isa…” She didn’t have the chance to complete her sentence because I said,
“I’m sorry.”
Again, somebody (also a Sales/Marketing Officer) sat in front of me, talked me while waiting to the nurse, “Ma’am, tiga-saan ka?”
I answered, “Mandaluyong,”
Since it was an evidence that my face was kinda upset with the time, she told me,
“Ma’am, sasamahan kita sa raffle promos and dollar game habang hinihintay natin yung certificate mo. Ano po ang gusto mo gift?”
After that, I asked her,
“when ko makukuha yung prudential plan ko and Datamex?”
She said,
“yun lang pong protector po and yan bag mo.”
I was so curious and the same time sadden; I did ask again,
“e ano yung 3 prizes na sinabi ni Mr. Winnie Andrade and nag-oo ang front liners nyo sa labas?”
She asked the nurse and approached me,
“Ma’am, tanong ko po manager ko…”
I went outside and said,
“bakit sabi nyo, totoo itong text ni Mr. Winnie Andrade at hindi scam.”
I was pissed off and some of the front liners and the nurse wanted me to sit down and eased my hotheaded face. I did say to her,
“sana pala di nako nag punta dito, parang scam ang ginawi niyo sakin e.”
What made more angry, when the manager of the nurse said to me,
“I-check po muna namin yung name ni Mr. Winnie Andrade kung tiga dito kasi po, iba yung Prudential Life nasa Paseo Makati, kami po Philippine Prudential kami…” and I heard a Sales/Marketing Officer (a guy not gay) told me “BIGYAN NYO NA LANG NG GIFTS TOKEN NATIN!” I just asked the name of the President of PPLIC because I wanted to open up my concern regarding this eventually and walked-out.
First, I went to Prudential Life to HELP THEIR COMPANY by visiting personally regarding the text of Mr. Winnie Andrade; I even read it in front of them and showed the text messaged if it was REAL OR SCAM. My query now, WHY DID FRONTLINERS SAY IT WAS ALL REAL? Second query, I said and even showed the texted messages came from Mr. Winnie Andrade - WHY DID THE FRONT LINERS ACKNOWLEDGE THE NAME OF MR. WINNIE ANDRADE? Third query, WHY DID THE SALES MANAGER ONLY CHECK THE NAME OF MR. WINNIE ANDRADE IF HE IS EMPLOYED ONLY WHEN I ASKED? Fourth, one of the employees said: “BIGYAN NYO NA LANG NG GIFTS TOKEN NATIN!” I was wearing shorts, slippers and I didn’t have any make-up because of my derma. My question again, DOES PRUDENTIAL LIFE PREFER CUSTOMERS WHO ARE CLASS A? Yes, I want to get my prizes because of the Datamex scholarship because I want to give it for my niece and if ever I just wore shorts and looked like: “parang bahay ang suot” I believe, must be RESPECTED. I maybe sound arrogant, but the Sales/Marketing Officer (the nurse) may be my witness who I am. If I walked-out because I was pissed off to their front liners, the Sales/Marketing Manager of the nurse and the one who said to just give me gifts or token. I really felt, I EXPERIENCED SCAM by PHILIPPINE PRUDENTIAL LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY.

i was once a victim… danvil ek-ek ung name nila telling na nagmerge n sila na phil.prudential sa SM north ito… all of our experiences are the same, may lalapit na tao (mostly bading) tas ssbhin na may freebies at wala ka tlgang babayran pero once you get there, the SCAM starts. papainumin ka ng ice tea tas may 45 min orientation daw. sa galing nila mangumbinsi, mpapaavail ka tlga ng inaalok nila. in short nagavail nga ako, pero imbis na security ang maramdaman ko dhil sa incurance eh tlgang hnd ako mapakali kaya sinearch ko sa Insurance Commission ang name nila to find out na hnd sila registered doon.. so tlgang napanic na ako… i rush to their office para ipa cancel ung policy ko, una ayaw nila i-cancel, sabi ko i have valid reasons and iba yung sinasabi nila verbally sa mga nkalagay sa policy. (thanks sa law subjects ko at marami akong pangontra sa knila) parang ayaw tlga nila ako pansinin so gumawa tlga ako ng eksena sa office nila to distract their other clients kaya yun, kinansel na nila yung polcy tas nerevert na nila yung binayad ko sa credit card then i waited pa ng 1month para makuha ung checke ko sa main office nila for the cash that i paid… thank god nakuha ko lhat ng binayad ko.. months later na tv na cila dhil sa financial problems nila. sa lahat ng nabiktima… make a move, wag lang kayo papasindak sa knila…

@Carol-yep, I hope you comeback there as soon as possible baka ubusin lang nila ‘yung 15 days look-in period.

I kept on telling them no, tapos papalitan ng isa pang agent,NO, tapos dadating supervisor, NO, tapos dadating ‘yung manager, NO talaga, hay naku ‘yung 45 minutes naging 4 hours din and my GF then (now my wife) were already pissed dahil naubos ‘yung quality time namin and hinaharangan pa kami lumabas… sayang talaga time namin kahit hindi kami nag-avail kasi once a month lang kami nun magkita na-sayang pa… T_T we just charged it to experience. I know hard selling ginagwa nila pero sana naman they find another way to get clients like online marketing, sobrang dami namang naghahanap ng insurance it’s just for them to find their market at hindi nila kelangan mamilit at manloko.

I’m also a victim of scam. I received a text last week from Prudential Philippines saying Ii receive 3 rewards and for the claiming code I need to visit their office at Makati to get the code and look for Ms. Kyle something. I’m glad I check in the internet about their company which is a scam. TY
