Lessons on Connections

A customer called in once and asked what was the grade of the wireless modem router (gateway) they have from us. I told her it was a Wireless-G. Then she asked about Wireless-N because her son mentioned it and that he was a serious gamer and he needs one like that. I told her that it has a wider coverage and a stronger signal. She then asked if her Internet will be faster. I said that it really depends on her speed plan. A better router doesn’t necessarily mean faster internet, which a lot of Americans seem to think.

I also had to explain that just because she has a Wireless-N router, it would work on anything on that same speed it offers. I told her that she’ll also need to get a Wireless-N adapter. And for more information, she could look up these information on the internet through Google or she could ask her son to look up the information on the equipment he needs for his gaming. With that, she seemed to like the idea and agreed.

I had to explain to another customer at another instance the difference between USB connections and ethernet or CAT5 connections. An agent told her that her internet was slow because she was using a USB connection and that she should use an ethernet connection. That agent sent her an ethernet cable. When the ethernet cable arrived, she found out that there was no way she could plug said cable into her computer, so now she was very upset that she can’t have faster internet.

I explained that if she is having a somewhat slower connection, it could be because she’s using a USB connection and it IS slower than if she’s using ethernet (she had a 3mbps connection and she wasn’t getting this speed), and she could either downgrade her account so she could maximize the speed she’s paying for, or get an ethernet card installed. What she understood was her internet speed will be a lot faster if she got an ethernet cable, faster than 3mbps. The slow speed was also because her computer was old, not entirely because she’s using USB.

Lesson 1: Sales talk is 20% truth and 80% BS.
They never give the whole truth. It’s like a wonderful contract with a page of fine print.

Lesson 2: A lot of things depend on compatibility.
Even if you have a Wireless-N router, but if your laptop for example is not built to support Wireless-N, then you won’t be getting fully the features of Wireless-N.. or something like that.

Lesson 3:
Even if something is on sale, if you still don’t have the money to buy it, you still won’t be able to get it.
A CAT6 cable supports gigabit transfers, but if your internet is just like PLDT’s 80something kbps ultrafast internet, then you won’t be experiencing gigafast speeds.

Thanks Zero for correcting me :3
