Usury

19 September, 2007 (07:36) | Philippines | By: Mi

I just learned this word a few days ago (from reading Shakespeare)

Usury is the act of lending money with a very high interest rate. In Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, the ones practicing usury were the Jews, and they were very much discriminated against.

Here in the Philippines, who are the usurers?

Those who lend by 5-6.

What is 5-6? 5-6 (read as paib-siks) is a way of lending money wherein if you borrow 5 apples, you must pay back 6 (120 %)
