Teacher Resources for Filipinos

29 September, 2007 (06:58) | Education, Philippines, Teaching, Tech | By: Mi

I have this big dream. It might sound a little too big, though, but I want to start a Teacher Resource website for Filipinos. In the wee hours of procrastinating my lesson plans and/or looking for what good activities I could use in my classes, all are resources for western classrooms.

The Filipino classroom is much more different. We have a quasi standard set curriculum for most schools in basic education. For example, in English, Music and Arts in high school, the first year focuses on Philippine literature, music and arts. In the second year, Afro-Asian. The third year focuses on Anglo-American or western, while the fourth year focuses on the world as a whole.

Well… What I’m saying is… You won’t really be able to find teacher resources on, say, Noli Me Tangere or Philippine History.

So what I am proposing to the whole world is this:

A Filipino Teacher Resource Website
which would include:

  • lesson plans
  • activities
  • links for resources
  • a forum where teachers could share ideas, post events or seminars, and so on.
  • links of schools
  • maybe when it gets popular enough a virtual classroom

Problems I expect to have:

  • I am inexperienced zero-experience running things like this
  • There are a lot of teachers who do not know how to surf the internet, use a computer, or even turn on a computer
  • There are a lot of teachers who prefer not to  be innovative and stick to traditional ways
  • Teachers can’t easily integrate technology (computers, internet) with classroom education because of… you know… stuff… unless the teacher is teaching in a school where all the kids have computers connected to the Internet.
  • Many many many more more more problems shall arise.

I know some of these are probably available but scattered here and there, but since we Filipinos are not that advanced technologically, we need to start something like this.

I’d like to think of this as a personal challenge for me. I really want to do this, and if this means asking people for help, instead of doing it on my own, then I would. This has been something I’ve been thinking of for a long time, even before I started Practice Teaching…

When PinoyBlogoSphere came out with the PhP100 webhosting for 7 months with 4gb space and 5gb monthly bw, i felt that it was a sign.

That 7 months would probably be enough time to gauge if the site will work or not.

Although 7 months of webhosting is only P100, the domain isn’t. I have to buy a domain.

Guro.com/.net/.org aren’t available …

I want something Filipino-y … I wanted FilipinoTeacher.net (.com is taken) but that might bring about misinterpretations or something… How about GuroAko.com/net/org or PinoyTeacher or something like that.

So… Should I continue this dream or not?

What domain name should I get? :D
