Student-teaching day 14

HRR (Home Reading Requirement?) test #1 today, so I just observed most of the time. Ma’am Teret gave me the Manila paper for the Crystal Cave readers and after they took the quiz, I gave them their group activity: Choose the 5 most important events and do a story pyramid.

Pyramid… I had in mind with pyramids are like those in Egypt, or the food pyramid, or Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. But I wasn’t really sure since it was the first time I heard that term “story pyramid.” Christian finished his quiz early (I learned later because he didn’t read and couldn’t answer it anyway) and wanted to know what they were to do next even if the others in his group weren’t done yet. I told him so that he could start thinking for his group. He confirmed my idea about the story pyramid being a layered figure… or so I thought.

Ma’am Teret was away so I couldn’t ask her immediately. I hadn’t read any of the books (King Arthur and Crystal Cave) and the kids were asking me questions left and right. I wanted to scream at one point… well… just wanted–not like I would, but that was how I felt. One of the boys, Jansen, told me that their group was done and asked me if he could post their work on the board already. Not having enough instructions, and not sure of what Ma’am Teret wanted, I told him to wait for their teacher, then I turned to talk with another girl who was asking another question. Maybe he didn’t hear, because he sort of slapped the Manila Paper against the door frame loud enough for me to hear and went back inside the room. I got angry and followed him. I asked him if he didn’t hear my say, “Wait for Ma’am de Villa.” He answered, “Ma’am, it’s okay.” — which wasn’t really an answer to my question… but I didn’t push it.

Soon Ma’am de Villa came back and I asked her if the most important event should be at the bottom of the Pyramid (because it would be the base or foundation) or at the top. Then she asked me if I didn’t know what a story pyramid was. I wanted to say, “Hell no. you could tell me.” But I didn’t. She told me what it was, and it was something I knew under another name–plot diagrams/charts.

I ran to the Crystal Cave kids and told them that I was wrong, and again and again I said sorry. They said it was okay. Of course it should be okay, they haven’t really started writing on their paper. They were so cool about it that my heart went out to them and I wished I read the book as well so I could’ve helped them.

I was so angry at myself today…

But Ma’am de Villa didn’t ask me to make a lot of changeson my LP so I still feel like a winner today in that battle.

I almost forgot… Justin was not feeling well so I and Gail brought him to the infirmary. I absolutely hate hospitals. I stayed there for over three hours and by the end of the day (actually by the time of my class) I was completely drained. All my energy and life power got sapped. I hate hospitals.

I’m so tired today…

I’m going to be delayed in adding links, but rest assured, I’m going to try adding when I have time. It’s such a tedious chore.
