Student-teaching day 12
We continued discussion on Beowulf today, but before that, I returned their papers and asked them to put it in their portfolio envelopes. There were some who were eager to help in distribution of the envelopes and papers… a little too eager that it reminded me of a fish market, so I made all of them go back to their seats and wait for their names to be called. It took longer, but at least they were quiet. Though, I think it would’ve taken even longer if I let the fish market continue. Next time I have something submitted, I’ll have them draw their group icon or something so I’ll just have to return it per group.
We continued a little on heroism, but more focused on the epic. To run through the story, we looked at each of the scenes and looked for “unsung heroes” in each scene. I also asked them if they considered certain characters heroes or not.
I liked the discussion where they were sort of arguing if the warrior Grendel ate before Beowulf attacked should be considered a hero. They started to come alive a little.
I made them do the movie poster activity but one group was too slow because they only had three members present while the other groups had 5 or 6. They were able to finish the posters but the presentations will have to be done tomorrow. I told them I’ll be strict with the time so we could finish the lesson tomorrow as well. I hope they don’t stall. They seem to be masters of it.
Before class started, I told them I was giving them all five minutes to go to the toilet or canteen because a lot of them come to me and ask if they could go out in the middle of class. It reduced the number of them missing or standing up and asking “May I go out?” so I think I’ll continue that practice. I just hope they won’t abuse.
I need to finish my lesson plan on the Ballads tomorrow!
