Student-teaching Day 04

The good thing about teaching two classes is that if you make a mistake in your first class, you could revise it for your second class to make it work. Your lesson plan not working does not always mean your LP was faulty. There are some other factors to consider, like classroom environment, the students…

I committed mistakes again. A LOT. The first, to bring the module to class. Second, to remember to bring it, since I made a mental note in the first class to bring it for the second class. And I forgot. Third, I should’ve asked my ST the agenda of the day, instead of just waiting to be surprised.

Speaking of being surprised, my ST really dropped surprise bombs yesterday. First she made me go ahead and tell the class to set-up while they wait for her… I was alone with the class… for a few minutes… I just didn’t expect it on Day 3. And then she told me to start preparing a lesson plan already……

Ahhh It’s going to be a busy weekend!

Thoughts of the day:

Speak loudly and clearly. Do NOT mumble. Smile.

Student-teaching Day 03

Ma’am de Villa told me to prepare a lesson plan already. It’s for the June 28-29 lecture on Beowulf. I’ve read the texts that are to be used last Monday… Almost right after the textbook was given to me. I have to recall how to make a lesson plan. I was trying to recall the moment she told me but I just couldn’t remember. This has caused me panic as well, making me not pay attention to the reports, which is why I wasn’t able to answer her quiz questions as well.

She also asked me to pick which class to handle. I chose 9-Gold because the Gold kids greet me already whenever they see me in the hallways. They seem to be more behaved as well.

I made some grave mistakes today. I didn’t introduce myself to 9-Calcium when I went to their class and told them to start preparing for their reports. Add to that not answering the questions Ma’am de Villa gave her class… I felt that I was being an irresponsible student teacher by asking her for the answers when I should’ve had them myself.

I had many erasures on their bluebooks (the test booklets). Considering answers, crossing answers I originally considered correct, miscounting the score… >_< I hope they don’t get mad at me. I seem to have a serious problem with counting. I started checking the Gates test (reading age) last Tuesday and I took 4-5 times longer because I was counting and recounting and recounting…. and recounting… sometimes the number I said to myself out loud, the number I had in my mind, and the number I wrote on the paper all didn’t match. It was frustrating. Sometimes I miss marking a wrong item, and miss counting it as well, making my values mismatch.

Oh, I ended up wearing my tall shoes. I feel more comfortable in it, not that I have any point of comparison.

Mantra for the day: I am a teacher.

I am a teacher. Soon. But I might as well put that in mind. I am a teacher with responsibilities to my students. I have to ensure quality learning by delivering quality teaching.

Karaoke

I don’t know if anyone noticed the OMFG Blah! page to the left…. I sing Karaoke. I use a program that plays an instrumental or karaoke version of a song, and I sing along with it. The voice is recorded. After that, I can add effects like echoes and stuff, then mix it. I do this for fun, even if I put my soundclick songs to paid downloading for most of my recordings. It’s just for US$0.25 though. XD I dunno if anyone would be willing to buy, but heck, I need money. Might as well give it a try.

I’m on various websites and forums other than that soundclick one, like OMGSONG and VoiceActingAlliance to promote myself or something but not really. I’m pretty popular on OMGSONG though. >_>  Dunno what people hear in my voice. They must be masochists.

Anyway, on OMGSONG….

VIRAL LINKS

Finally, I was able to move my lazy behind up and get around to doing this. I saw this on Sarah’s journal but (OMG THERE ARE ANTS ON MY DESK AGAIN WTH) I was just so lazy to do it. I don’t know why I did the Viral Tags… Oh yeah, I was bored. (I should stop eating on the computer desk) But I was still lazy enough not to go back and check the Viral Links post.

ANd since I did the viral icons as well, this just means that I’m joining the bandwagon and throwing myself down to the deep pits of my hate for making money online.

Student-teaching Day 02

I sat in Ma’am Tina’s class. She’s amazing! But that’s not the only thought I had.

For the first class, I wondered, “How would she give the same lecture to the next class?” I got my answer soon enough. It was the same lesson, but slightly different delivery. There were some points mentioned in Gold that was not mentioned in Calcium and vice versa, but the essential concepts were retained.

My shoes broke today. I desperately tried to make the sole of the heel stick, but no masking tape or chewing gum could stick them together. I brought them to Mr. Quickie on my way home.

I wear a 3-inch high pair of leather shoes because that was my idea of looking respectable. At least with regard to shoes.

Maybe I’m going to wear my sandals on Thursday. I asked Ma’am de Villa if I could wear open-toe shoes… I had some… My feet need a break already even if it’s just Day 02.

Thoughts for today:

I think it would be a good idea to always wrap up the lesson at the end of the class instead of leaving them hanging. This is almost impossible when you just run out of time. I’m not really certain on how to accomplish that if that happens.

Eiga Sai 2007

The UPFI Schedule for this year’s Eiga Sai (Japanese Film Festival). I’ve not been watching for thepast four years though. Either I had a class and/or I was just lazy. OMG. Why am I so lazy? Someone save me (/>_<)/

Anyways, Eiga Sai is going to be held in other venues, not just at UP, but since I’m studying there anyway, I might as well. Here is the schedule and line-up for the festival.  All showings are FREE. and I love free stuff.

Gonna watch the 5pm shows, I think. From these movies, I’ve seen Kamikaze Girls and Gaichu. I want to see the rest. >_< Good thing my classes are just until 3:30 or 4:00. XD I can stay at the faculty room until 4:30 I guess.

It’s just that there seems to be more and more Japanophiles these days. It’s annoying, to be honest. I don’t know why. I feel like they’re so…. so…. trying hard. >_<

I’ll check FSS first if they have the other movies. Although… It would be nice to watch free movies in a theater. It’s free anyway.

Educ 181 Journal 01

Last Friday was the first day of the Student-Teaching Seminar. It is going to run until the semester ends, which is around October of this year. This goes hand-in-hand with the student-teaching activities for the same five months.

I felt nervous. It hasn’t even started and I was already feeling so nervous. At certain pints, I was even feeling tear-eyed as I sat there at the auditorium, listening to the speakers talk about what it’s like to be a teacher, a student-teacher, a supervising teacher, and so on.

They mentioned stuff like being committed, being devoted and so on, and I felt guilty because I was in this half-heartedly. They say stuff like, “I’m sure you’re all excited” and in my head I’m screaming, “HELL NO! No way! I’m nowhere near excited!.”

But what else can I do (other than the loser’s way) other than wing my way and make the best of it?

This is it. My final stage. I have to get through this. This is a now-or-never, do-or-die thing. If I mess this up, it’s over for me. I’m done for.

Student-teaching Day 01

I’ll just copy from my journal since we are required to write one.

I guess I’ll start off this regular journal by introducing myself and the activity.

I am a Bachelor of Secondary Education student majoring in English and minoring in Filipino at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. I am now in my final semester before I graduate, and I need to participate in the Student-Teaching program, or to undergo some kind of internship, for my final requirement. For this, I have delegated myself to do my internship at the laboratory school of my university, the UP Integrated School or UPIS.

I am required to hold at least 10 teaching hours and 10 non-teaching hours a week. Teaching means to be in the classroom and doing actual teaching, and non-teaching means to be in my post to do things like checking papers and holding consultations. I am also required to submit a journal of the day’s events, my feelings, and other observations and

Day 1

My first day as a student-teacher wasn’t that eventful, but I wouldn’t call it eventless. I just sat around, got myself broke, met with my Supervising Teacher (ST), and observed one of her classes. However, I felt good. While walking along the corridors, before I even got to observe any class, a couple of students greeted me and called me “Ma’am.” I couldn’t help but smile and greet them back.

When I first met my ST around noon, I finally felt the excitement about being a student-teacher (st). To be honest, I wasn’t excited at all before that. I was scared and nervous. I felt like I might not be able to do it right. After the conversation with her, I think I can.

Some observations:

  • The seats are arranged in a U–perhaps the teacher should stay in the front center so all the students could see her clearly. My ST just stayed in the corner by her desk most of the time that day.
  • I don’t know what I should be seeing on the walls, except that the works of the students are on them. Speaking of which, the class, 9-Gol, groupnames were LAN, ChewBox, Freshmakers, Shearjotimla, and Gingy. I forgot their seating arrangements. I must take note of that next time. I think I’ll remember when I see them again.
  • The teacher starts class by writing the day’s “To Do” list on the board before greeting them.
  • For recitation, the teacher doesn’t waste time and urges the students to talk. She tried making all their voices heard at least once.
  • The teacher asked questions they didn’t expect. she let them know that all the things they do must have a purpose and not just because they wanted or liked to. — Living a purposeful life.
  • A student mentioned an expression and she wrote it on the board, but she didn’t really expound on it. I don’t think the students really understood what it meant. Maybe she should have explained a little.
  • Her tone of voice was pretty much the same all through out. I think. Or I was just unable to distinguish the tone…
  • She called 9-Gold 9-Calcium. I shouldn’t make that mistake. They might kill me.
