Elizabeth
There was no fancy thinking on how I got my name. It wasn’t because they dreamed big and wanted me to be queen-like. It wasn’t because it meant “consecrated to God” and they wanted me to be a nun.
She wanted to name me Clarissa or Clarisse, but my grandparents wouldn’t hear of it. Mama was given a list of names when I was born, and was told to choose from it. She picked Elizabeth because she thought, that would have a lot of nickname options–Elle, Eli, Liz, Iza, Eliza, Beth, and so on.
I grew up as Beth…at least, that was how I was called or referred to most often. I was sometimes called Sabet, Bekang, Bakekang, Rebecca, and Margie.
