Take Not The Road Less Traveled. Make New Roads.
I’m posting this because it is inspiring. Coming from this 16-year-old wonder girl, Mikaela Irene Fudolig, who delivered the Valedictory speech for the graduates of UP Diliman Batch 2007.. I waited for her speech and the recording of her speech, because I had a feeling it would be good. And it was. At least for that line. Not the road less-traveled, but a new one.
However, I have comments:
- Â The message is good, but Teachers and Nurses aren’t quite the lowest paid professionals in countries like the States and Canada. Higher demand + less resources = higher pay. There are a lot of old people in the US now, and a lot of kids. Kids these days want cool professions like Engineering or Computer programming or something.
- Koreans come here and get themselves naturalized not because the Philippines is so amazing, but because the Philippines is cheap. Filipinos being naturally hospitable, tend to be extra nice to foreigners. If the Koreans would be willing to pay what the Filipinos need, then everything is okay. Koreans can get their women cheaply. Koreans can study English cheaply. They can set up a business cheaply. They can get a house, live cheaply.
“Do they know something we don’t?”
Mikki asked.
- My answer would be, yes. Not a lot of Filipinos would think that these Koreans are    actually exploiting our people, our country. But do we see it as this? No. We see this as increase in the National income due to tourism, increase in Foreign investors, increase in Korean friends because of Korean Dramas, increase in additional income for some who “teach” or “tutor” English to Koreans who pay ridiculously low rates, opportunity to those who aren’t really that good at English to “teach” it. And so on.
- The paths that shorten the distance from one point to another, instead of walking on the sidewalks, most UP students do walk that path. However, it is usually on soil or grass, and when it rains, no one really wants to pass through that path, and take the concreted sidewalk.
- What does this say? Only under the sun, when it is bright, would people pass through that beaten path. Well, maybe at night too, but when it rains, it’s a definite no for most. If one would pass through that path, that person would either have really good shoes enough to have confidence in it, or crazy and would want to play in the mud. When the real hardships come, they would go and take the long but easier way, which can be evidently seen in the youth today. The youth taking Nursing, SpEd–to be able to go overseas easily–and pseudo-careers in Call Centers–to be able to earn easy money.
I would not like to think that working in a Call Center should be made into a career, instead, a mere stepping-stone to attain something higher. I, myself, am thinking of having a career at a Call Center… But I also want to attain something better. Well… Let’s see first what’s going to happen.
- I think she is very sheltered. >__>
Hmm….
How will I make new roads? Instead of taking the road less traveled?
I want to teach Filipino/Tagalog to foreigners or Filipinos who are in other countries but cannot speak their own language, and would like to learn.
On a side-note, I refuse to call the Koreans who are flocking to this country “friends.” This is not an act of racism. I just don’t like them abusing the Filipinos and the country.
I like this speech, but I like the sunflower speech from last year or was it the other year? It was about the graduates of UP leaving after graduation, just like the sunflowers of UP Diliman. After summer, they start disappearing one by one.
maa…
